I spent the entire Lunar New Year weekend at my friends' houses. Notice the emphasis on the different locations. My friends have a Lunar New year tradition of playing games that tend to involve a lot of exchanges in colored papers. We would rotate the destination so that the previous house would have a chance to clean up. Not much of a gamer (I prefer outdoor games), I was bored for the first couple of days. Fortunately, I brought my camera on the last date and was able to capture a few precious moments.
I'm thrilled that my first movie review is wedding related. If you were to ask, what was I doing in this "chick flick?"I would answer, "It's for research." Truthfully, the reason my friends andI went to the theater was to see "Cloverfield."There were showings at 8:00pm and one at9:15pm. We all chose the later viewing becausewe have not eaten and wanted to have enoughtime to wait, order and eat at a nearbyMalaysian fusion restaurant, Coconut Grove. It turned out, we finished our meal veryquickly at ended up in the the Cinema houseat 8:30pm. Since we bought our ticketsbefore dinner, we decided to enter the movieearly rather waiting outside in the 40 Degreerainy weather. We did what all bored audiencewould do, enter another movie for a sneak peek.Since "Cloverfield" is in the "GUY" category,we let the ladies choose the title.
Naturally, they dragged the guys in "27 Dresses."After of 30 minutes of viewing, we werehooked but had to leave to see out primaryobjective. After 1:30 hours of dizzling,mind-blowing, handy-cam cinematography,we exited theater 20 and looking to seeif there was a late showing of the chick flick.Bingo! We caught another showing right onthe exact moment we walked out on it earlier.I think we were meant to see the movie on this particular night. to see the movie on this particular night. Part of the charm of "27 Dresses" is therefreshing chemistry between Katherine Heigl (Gross Anatomy fame)who plays Jane and James Marsden (AKA Cyclop from X-MEN),who plays Kevin. There were many sprinkles oflaughs in between really cliches-ish script thatfollows many past romantic comedy formulas. The actors are verygood to the eyes. There is notrue villian. The closest thing to an antagonist isJane's spoiled sister,Tess (Malin Akerman). In the end, the true success of a chick flick isbased on the response by the male audience. Most of the out-loud laughter I'd mentionedearlier was from the testosterone side of theequation. Overall, the movie is very entertainingmovie and I would recommend it to friends. As I photographer,I did learn nothing aboutthe wedding business from the movie.
